Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. is a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of investigative reporting. IRE was formed in 1975 to create a forum in which journalists throughout the world could help each other by sharing story ideas, newsgathering techniques and news sources.

News/Media Alliance is a nonprofit organization representing nearly 2,000 news outlets and their multiplatform businesses in the United States and Canada. Its editorial mission mirrors that of the Foundation itself: “to promote and elevate the standards of journalism.” Nieman Reports is home to the Nieman Watchdog Project, which chronicles how journalists can hold those in power to account, founded by longtime Washington Post reporter and 1950 Nieman Fellow Murrey Marder.

ProPublica is an independent, non-profit news organization that produces investigative journalism in the public interest. Its work focuses exclusively on truly important stories with “moral force.” It does this by producing journalism that shines a light on exploitation of the weak by the strong and on the failures of those with power to vindicate the trust placed in them.

The Reporters Without Borders site offers insights into the lives of journalists working around the world. Readers may browse the site according to region, including information on Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe/Russia, and the Middle East/North Africa. Other important features of the site include a World Press Freedom Index, which evaluates each nation on a number of variables to assign them a yearly ranking.

The Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy is a Harvard University research center dedicated to exploring and illuminating the intersection of press, politics and public policy in theory and practice. The Center strives to bridge the gap between journalists and scholars, and between them and the public. Through teaching and research at the Kennedy School of Government and its program of visiting fellows, conferences and initiatives, the Center is at the forefront of its area of inquiry.

The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior. Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry through the daily work of its nearly 10,000 members; works to inspire and educate current and future journalists through professional development; and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press through its advocacy efforts.

The Center is an independent opinion research group that studies attitudes toward the press, politics and public policy issues. Site visitors are able to link to survey reports, commentary, and data sets.

The Quinnipiac University Poll is a public opinion poll based at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. It surveys public opinion in Connecticut, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, and nationally. The poll is cited by major news outlets.
